Day 3
We must leave the inn very early in order to travel east along the Paria Peninsula to reach the lower part of Cerro Humo. We will climb up very slowly indeed because apart from the spectacular rain forest, we are looking for such endemics as the Scissor-tailed Hummingbird, White-tipped Quetzal, White-throated Barbtail, Handsome Fruiteater, Venezuelan Flower-Piercer, and Yellow-faced Redstart, as well as Green-tailed Emerald, Spangled Coquette, White-tailed Sabrewing, Green Honeycreeper among others.
Day 4
Early morning we will go by boat along the Ca?o de Ajíes to look for Rufous Crab-Hawk, Cream-colored Woodpecker, Black-chinned, Silvered, and Jet antbirds among others. Then in the afternoon, we will head south towards the agricultural town of Caripe, nestled in a valley and surrounded by hills covered with coffee plantations. We will leave our suitcases in the Hacienda La Cuchilla and head for the Oilbird Cave, which is now a National Park. We hope to have the opportunity to visit the cave and also to observe Maroon-faced and Scarlet-fronted Parakeets as well as Groove-billed Toucanets and also the Green Jays begging for a hand-out as you enjoy a cup of coffee. By 7:00 p.m. we must be back at the mouth of the cave to watch the thousands of Oilbirds exit on their nightly search for food.
Day 5
Early morning birding in the fabulous coffee plantation. Many hummingbirds, tanagers, oropendolas, as well as White-winged Becard, Strong-billed Woodcreeper, among others. Then we continue south, passing the oil city of Maturin towards El Palmar, we must soon continue south to take the ferry across the mighty Orinoco River. Then drive some 2 hours to El Palmar on the edge of the Imataca Forest Reserve. However we might stop in some hot birding spot on the way to search for Purple Gallinule, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, White-eyed Parakeet, Striped Cuckoo, Slaty Antshrike, Chesnut-vented Conebill, and many other birds of lowland dry
forest.
Day 6
Up early in the morning to visit the Harpy Eagle nest in the Reserve. When we have seen the Harpies, we will search for the Musician Wren with its violin-like song. Rufus-throated and White-plumed Antbirds if we are fortunate enough to find an ant swarm. That could be an unforgettable experience. Crimson Topaz Hummingbird, Black-eared Fairy, Guianan Toucanet, Green Oropendola, Opal-rumped and other spectacular tanangers, Paradise Jacamar, Lesser Seed-Finch with its beautiful song, Slate-colored and Yellow-green Grosbeak, and if we are very, very lucky the Red-and-Black Grosbeak. That would be a tick for the most hardened birder. Here also are found Black Nunbird, Purple-throated Fruitcrow and the Scarlet-rumped Cacique.
Day 7.
After yesterdays exertions, thrills and wonders, we now have a long five-hour trip ahead of us to rest while we lead south to the home-away-from-home of all birders, the Barquilla de Fresa. But do not fret, we will have many stops to bird along the way to bird. We will be staying at the inn for four days to take full advantage of the many birding opportunities and spots, as well as having beer or coffee in the garden of the inn while we watch the afternoon show of the many species flying over.
Day 8/9/10
We will bird the Escalera leading up to the Gran Sabana itself, the Capuchinbird Road, the Guyana Trail, as well as a portion of the Gran Sabana to look for the Guayana Cock-of-the-Rock, Capuchinbird, White and Bearded Bellbird, Scarlet-horned and White-fronted Manakins, Golden-tufted Grackle with their harp-like song, Olive-backed, Yellow-bellied, Paradise, Blue-backed and Spotted Tanangers, Flutist Wren, Tepui Spinetail, Rose-collared Piha, Screaming Piha, Tepui Greenlet, Tepui Goldenthroat,Tepui Brush-Finch, Great Elaenia, Pompadour, Purple-breasted and Spangled Cotingas, Channel-billed Toucan, Red-fan and Mealy Parrots, and we must not forget the Cayenne Jay. These are just a few of the species of this area.
Day 11
After far too short a time to bird in the morning, we bid a reluctant farewell to Henry Cleve, the kind and thoughtful owner of Barquilla. We have along six-hour trip ahead of us to catch the flight back to the central coast with transfer to Caracas.
Day 12
Departure for home with what we hope will be many happy memories of an unforgettable trip.
